History: ALUA was founded in 1974
and has now been in existence for thirty two years. The Association's objectives are to achieve:
1) a reliable and punctual train service,
2) the provision of well maintained rolling stock,
3) full, audible and timely information on services, delays
and fares,
4) the provision of a half-hourly service to Alton and
Bentley throughout the working day and the restoration of journey times and the stopping pattern between Alton and Waterloo
to that which was timetabled pre-December 2004,
5) better waiting accommodation, parking and security
at stations,
6) co-ordination of bus and train timetables to minimise
the need to 'Car commute' to and from your station.
ALUA has a long history of defending the interests of
the line - from cancelled trains in 1974, reconfiguration of services in 1985, privatisation in 1995 and in 2004, one of the
greatest threats - the introduction of extended journey times and extra stops for almost all Alton line trains. Although we
have lost a few battles we have won others, e.g. a half hourly service between Woking and Alton and the extension of the off-peak
concession to the 08.44 from Alton instead of the 09.14.
ALUA Committee: We have an active
committee that meets once a month to co-ordinate the activities of ALUA. We also publish a newsletter several times
a year.
